Supper was an extravagant affair for which Franz was exceedingly grateful. How Klaus had procured shark, I couldn't guess, but it was superb. There was a fresh green salad, evenly sliced tomatoes with cucumbers. If I had not known better, I would have thought us at the Italian Riviera, certainly not the Alps in December. Klaus was beaming with all the praise, as well he should. Dessert, a gelato with fresh fruit, finished me off completely. After profuse gratitude was poured upon Klaus and his family, we moved to the study with the request for coffee.

Offering Eva, a spot on the Chesterfield, I sat beside her.

"Franz, I left your correspondence on the table. Mine is just under the lamp there on the desk if you would be kind enough to check my work, incoming and outgoing," I said.

Eva seemed to be taking in all the different things in the study. Elsa, who had not made an appearance until just now, brought in the tray of coffee. She placed the tray on the large table, excused herself, and closed the door behind her.

"Ah, yes, she is quite the beauty. Am I remiss to guess this is the young creature who beguiled you so easily?" Eva said, looking me in the eye with a playful glint in hers.

"Beguiled might be a stretch…" I was saying when "Pffssshhhhtttt" was exhaled loudly from the desk. Franz pretended to be completely engrossed in his work, never looking up. Eva laughed at me but patted me on the arm reassuringly. She then went to the tray and was kind enough to pour for all of us. She waved us back to our seats and delivered our cups, but continued to wander around the room, becoming familiar with different objects and examining the photos and paintings.

"Yes, Sandy, they are all correct. Interesting news from both parties. Mine is as well. Eva, you understand the confidence involved here of course?" Franz looked at her to confirm she understood his statement. He then continued, "The Reich is gathering troops along the border with Austria, more specifically in the Salzburg area. Nothing excessive as yet, but building, nonetheless. There also seem to be regular sightings of Luftwaffe, patrols going over every two to four hours during daylight," he finished.

"Information which corroborates what we understand of the timing in play," I said, having also risen from my seat. I walked over to the fire to stoke it and add a log. "Fritzy, would you add to both? Would you ask them if we are able to gain any firm information on troop strength, equipment totals, or anything of that nature? It would be nice to have enough decisive information to share with the Chancellor that supports the need to ignore the treaty and begin a defensive troop build-up," I said.

Franz countered, "I quite agree, but sadly it is a line I believe our cousin will not cross. However, it wouldn't hurt for all of us to be armed with the information."

"Might this be a good time to review the notes recovered from last night's guests?" Eva asked.
